I certainly won't spoil things by revealing any more but fans of the novels already know the answer.

Regarding fans of the film series, some are unhappy about the movie versions and the adaptations of the books, there is an online petition asking for Breaking Dawn to be rated R.

The wording of the petition can be read below.

It is understood that not only is Breaking Dawn rated R in the book, the director should produce a film that mirrors it's book in original form that is greatly loved by females (and some males) all over the world. Losing major details of the movie will definitely hurt the release of Breaking Dawn and disappoint fans everywhere.

The problem here is that Stephenie Meyer's contract with Summit Entertainment decrees that the movies be released as PG-13 rated, she does not want these movies to be harder hitting and feels the novels have a young fan base and the movies should reflect this.

I feel the petition is pointless, these movies do great business because of the very fact they have a younger fans and because they are PG-13, an R would damage box office, it's true that Breaking Dawn has more mature themes but these can still be told in the confines of a PG-13 certificate.

Breaking Dawn is being split into two films despite the fact the novel barely has enough material to cover one.

This movie franchise is a cash cow for Summit and they wish to make a few more bucks before it finishes, thus two movies to finish the series are better to maximise profits.

Meanwhile The Twilight Saga: Eclipse is doing phenomenal box office business, it cost $68 million dollars to make and has currently taken over $450 million dollars at the worldwide box office, it still has a long way to go to catch up New Moon which took $709 million worldwide. The other thing a new cinema release does is promote the other films in the series and sales of Twilight and New Moon have been given a huge boost on DVD and Blu Ray.

Robert Pattinson seems to be under some pressure from being in a hit film franchise, he almost seems embarrassed by the success of the Twilight movies and has stated in interviews his desire to escape being typecast. He seems ill at ease with the fanbase of The Twilight Saga.

He should relax and enjoy the fame while it's there. In Hollywood you are only as big as your last movie and they treasure box office success more than anything else, you can have a successful movie career without worrying about box office but money talks in Hollywood and hit movies give you control of your future with the ability to choose film projects and have more creative control over scripts and the choice of directors, although Pattinson does not yet have this level of creative control it is there for actors who are fortunate enough to have box office appeal.

The Twilight movies are more of a love story than horror, they will disappoint you if you go in expecting full blooded horror, instead you should watch these movies as a love story set in a fantasy world.

The first Twilight film was mostly shot in and around Portland and Oregon with New Moon and Eclipse being shot in various locations around Vancouver, Canada.

Forks, Washington has seen a surge in tourist activity thanks to these movies.

After the Twilight movies end you can fully expect the usual extended editions of each film to hit the marketplace as the studio tries to make a bit more cash from the franchise, in the meantime you can enjoy The Twilight Saga: Eclipse playing at a cinema near you today.

Werewolf Mythology And Movies

The Dark Corner

lycanthropes on film

movie monsters

werewolf films

werewolf horror movies

werewolf movies

werewolf mythology

werewolf tales

werewolves in movies

In Greek mythology, Lycaon was transformed into a wolf as a result of eating human flesh, this brings up an interesting theory that tales of werewolves were used to explain serial killers because it was thought inhuman that one person could kill so many or commit such atrocious acts.

A werewolf is also known as a lycanthrope or in Greek λυκάνθρωπος, tales of werewolves are found in most cultures and it's natural that they found their way into films. Lon Chaney Jnr was the star of the 1941 film The Wolf Man which has fantastic atmosphere, there were of course movies before that but it's one that i fondly remember.

In Greek mythology, Lycaon was transformed into a wolf as a result of eating human flesh, this brings up an interesting theory that tales of werewolves were used to explain serial killers because it was thought inhuman that one person could kill so many or commit such atrocious acts, just like a werewolf, a serial killer commits acts of mutiliation and cannibalism and usually does it in cycles, thus medieval tales of werewolves were nothing more than serial killers.

Those suffering from conditions such as Epilepsy or Porphyria ( hair grows all over your face and sometimes your body ) would sometimes be persecuted and called werewolves.

In 1692, an 80 year old man called Thiess claimed werewolves were the hounds of God. warriors sent down into hell to do battle with witches and demons, they would protect local crops and go to heaven when they died, the man got 10 lashes for his superstitious beliefs.

The French film The Brotherhood Of The Wolf loosely told the tale of the Beast of Gévaudan, between 1764 and 1767 over 80 men, women and children were killed, a sole survivor described the beast as a giant wolf, many wolves were hunted down and killed and the killings eventually stopped, wolves do not attack and kill people though so it's more likely that superstition and fear brought about such tales and it's highly likely that the real killer of these people was in fact a serial killer who may even have dressed in wolf skin to commit murder.

Wolves were hunted mercilessly throughout Europe and have a bad reputation but they do not willingly attack humans unless their young are in immediate danger, the mythology of the werewolf is interesting but the most logical conclusion to be drawn from all the various tales is that in cases where mass killings have occurred it is very likely a serial killer that was responsible. This of course brings up the fact that serial killers are not a product of today but have existed for thousands of years and are likely born with the desire to kill. ( controversial view )

My top five favourite werewolf movies are listed below.

5) The Company Of Wolves

Directed by Neil Jordan who would later have a stab at vampires with Interview With The Vampire, the early part of the film feels to me to have been inspired by the tale of Little Red Riding Hood, the film has wonderful atmosphere and is creative film making.

The film has a dreamlike quality to it and is not your typical werewolf film, its beautifully filmed and the music score is enchanting, i would not call this a horror film, it's more fantasy than horror, lots of symbolism in this film and it's a wonderfully overlooked classic.

4) Dog Soldiers

Dog Soldiers is a low budget film directed by Neil Marshall. ( The Descent ) The tagline for the movie is six soldiers, full moon, no chance.

They could not afford to do werewolf transformations but you do get to see the werewolves which look to me to be based off the werewolf designs from The Howling. Lots of tension in this movie.

Good moody atmosphere and you feel a sense of danger lurking somewhere in the woods, the characters are likeable, one of the very best werewolf movies and a rewarding movie experience.

3) Bad Moon

The werewolf transformation scene in Bad Moon was effective and the film has good atmosphere which is essential for this type of movie, Michael Pare is the werewolf who is trying desperately to control his affliction every full moon. He hopes living with his sister and her son will cure him.

The film itself is short at only 80 minutes and it was filmed in scope format 2.35:1, this film impressed me a lot, the dog probably steals the show from all the human actors, films like this need good atmosphere, an effective music score and good direction and camerawork and this has all of those qualities.

Eric Red who wrote The Hitcher directed this movie.

2) An American Werewolf In London

Rick Baker won an Oscar for his fabulous werewolf transformations in this movie, the effects sequences are very effective and the movie has a wonderful music score featuring classic songs.

Jenny Agutter was great as the nurse who falls in love with an American tourist who ia attacked on the moors and bitten by a werewolf, his friend was killed in the same attack and shows up throughout the movie offering useless advice and looking more rotten and ragged everytime he appears.

John Landis directed this movie and i think it's the best work he has done.

1) The Howling

Director Joe Dante went on to do films such as Gremlins and Innerspace but i think this low budget werewolf film is his best movie.

A news reporter ( Dee Wallace ) is attacked while covering a story, along with her husband she visits an isolated colony to get away from the horror she experienced, little does she realise what the colony really is.

The Howling has atmosphere and fabulous werewolf transformation effects and brilliant dark humour. The Howling is the best werewolf movie ever made, forget the very poor sequels and watch this one instead.

Click here for a sitemap of all the posts at this site or you may like to check out some other posts available at the site at the bottom of this page.
