Law Abiding Citizen Promotion imageGerard Butler and Jamie Foxx star in Law Abiding Citizen, the film is very much a revenge movie and has something to say about the perceived failings of the criminal justice system and although it's just a movie it does make several good points.

Butler plays Clyde Shelton, a family man whose house is targetted by two robbers, one of them murders his wife and child but instead of the full force of the law coming down on them we see one do a plea bargain for a lighter sentence which also gets the other one a death sentence.

Jamie Foxx plays Nick Rice, the lawyer who prosecuted the robbers and arranged the plea bargain, ten years pass by and everyone who was involved in the original case is being killed, the trail leads to Clyde Shelton who is happy to be arrested, he openly admits to the killings but there seems to be little hard evidence against him, Rice must find a way to stop the killings before he too ends up dead.

The idea behind the film is a good one, i have tried not to give too much away in my summary above as i feel it would spoil the film for anyone who has not seen it but it is a little difficult giving my thoughts on the film without revealing too much, i'll try anyways.

There are some real good standout moments in the early part of the film, i must admit to cheering at the scene where Clyde tells the judge exactly what he thinks of her and then adds that she takes it up the ass, thats a funny moment. ( i thought )

I am sure there are many of us out there who believe the criminal justice system is too soft on criminals and we feel let down by those who govern us and make the laws and in that sort of climate you will get those who try and deliver vigilante justice, it's not right but sometimes the system that is supposed to protect us breaks down and people feel the need to take justice into their own hands, it's something Law Abiding Citizen looks at briefly although it's a film that is more action than talk so it never looks too closely into why the system failed, indeed it's probably a matter of opinion as to if the system failed, although i'm firmly on the side that says it did.

The film was convincing up until the final act, i was not convinced by the last part of the movie and it was good until then, i felt all sympathy for the Shelton character disappeared during the latter moments of the film, thats probably what the makers wanted but it also felt a little manipulative since this was not a bad guy, this was a guy who had just been pushed too much by a system that had let him down badly, something a lot of people can relate to and understand, i feel they could have written a much better ending, more sympathetic to the character.

There is a fine supporting cast with Leslie Bibb, Colm Meaney and Bruce McGill all standouts in their respective roles, Foxx and Butler do a good job too and the direction was capable but as i said earlier i felt the script lost its way a little near the end of the film. There are a few unexpected moments which are sure to either shock you or be a crowd pleaser. ( or both )

Image quality was very good, film grain was preserved and detail was high and unlike other recent movies i have watched i spotted no compression artifacts, possible very slight ringing in two scenes but nothing that made me feel this was anything but a very high quality transfer.

The sound mix was also good, as an example during the graveyard scene the subwoofer kicked in and the rear surround speakers came alive while speech was always easy to hear, for this type of movie i felt the mix was appropriate and it did it's job.
