One of my favourite horror movies of the eighties is John Carpenters The Thing, this was a remake of the classic 1951 film The Thing From Another World.
I was a bit worried to read about a new remake of The Thing, i was concerned it was going to be a poor remake full of CGI effects but little substance and perhaps even watered down to PG-13 territory, my fears were based on the fact that this is the fate that met The Fog. I am more relaxed to find out this will in fact be a prequel leading up to the events in the original film.
The film will focus on the Norwegian base seen in the 1982 film.
Joel Edgerton has been cast playing a character called Sam Carter and Mary Elizabeth Winstead will be playing Kate Lloyd. The director is Matthijs van Heijningen Jr and he has a film coming out this year called Army Of The Dead which is set in a zombie infested Las Vegas.
Tom Woodruff Jr is working on the creature effects and he has also worked on films such as Aliens, Starship Troopers and the Alien vs Predator movies so if nothing else the effects work should be great. The makers have said they do not intend to overuse CGI in the film.
I think the music score will play a large part in whether i like the film or not, if they choose a classical music score then i feel it will be more creepy and effective but if they decide to use a rock score or a score with lots of pop music then it would just not work for me, i fully expect them to use a classical type score which reflects the original movie.
I think if they respect the original film which they appear to be doing but also add something new to the mix then this could be a fantastic film for horror fans, i just hope they don't attempt to make a PG-13 movie and i hope they stick to their promise and do not overuse CGI.
