Blu Ray Screencaps of The Dark Knight.
What could have been one of the best releases of the blu ray format ends up being disappointing due to the studio using the IMAX DMR version. I wrote about this in my original review which i repeat a few lines of below.
The Dark Knight's 35mm shot footage was scanned from an InterPositive at 4K in order to make the IMAX prints, the DMR processing ( digital media remastering ) upconverted the 35mm footage, grain reduction and sharpening was applied, then it was recorded back out to an IMAX negative for creation of the IMAX prints and it is very likely this print was used for the Blu Ray edition. The problem is ugly edge enhancement. Check out frames 8 and 15 for examples and check out frame 12 which is a 70mm IMAX shot scene.
Its a very good film but it's let down by the poor transfer, you could argue it represents exactly what people saw in IMAX cinemas but sharpening is so ugly on blu ray.
The sound quality is excellent though, all the speakers get a good workout and the subwoofer goes very deep and the film has good clear speech. Ok Christian Bale's Batman voice is not always easy to hear but thats intentional and part of the sound mix.I hope sometime in the future this film gets a re-release and they use a good 35mm print instead of this edge enhanced mess. There are some scenes that do look very detailed and wonderful but far too much sharpening on far too many scenes spoil the image quality.
