This film is based on the true story of Wladyslaw Szpilman who lived in Warsaw in Poland and was considered one of the best piano players of his time but during World War II he and his family are persecuted for being Jewish, his family are sent to concentration camps to die and Szpilman barely survives himself and goes into hiding, thats just an outline of the story.
Roman Polanski directed this film and he is currently fighting extradition to America for a crime he committed over thirty years ago, he is a fabulous director but no matter how many years has passed he should stand trial for his crime which i won't get into too much but you can read about what happened at this site here. The only comment i will make is the celebrities supporting him should be ashamed of themselves, its basically about morals and they should all take a good hard look at themselves because what Polanski did is indefensible, he knew exactly what he was doing that night and he was 44 years old and he knew her age, taking drink or drugs is no excuse whatsoever and he is guilty of a very serious crime and should stand trial for it.
Polanski has directed some fine films such as Repulsion, The Fearless Vampire Killers, Chinatown, Tess, The Ninth Gate and of course this film for which he won the best director Oscar but that does not excuse his criminal and morally bankrupt actions of the past.
Adrien Brody also won an Oscar for best actor for this film, Brody is just superb in the film and gives a solid assured performance. All the supporting actors do a good job also and i can't fault a single performance in this film.
Image quality on this disc has been praised widely on some review sites but i felt the image had some issues, check frame 2 and 4 and you will see some colour fringing issues and look at the outfits they are wearing and there is a lack of fine detail, Check out frame 12 and note the grain structure and fine detail is present and then barely a minute later you can see with frame 13 the grain seems eradicated and the image detail suffers. I noticed this sort of thing happening during the whole film and i do not believe it was shot this way. I personally felt this was an inconsistent transfer with some scenes looking very good and other scenes looking horrendous.
Audio quality was good on this transfer, i did not have an issue with any aspect of the audio although its not a sound mix which you will use to show off your home cinema system.
Now heres a dealbreaker for you, this disc has no subtitles for the German audio and there are some major scenes which rely on the subtitles, this was a huge problem for me when viewing the film as i couldn't understand a number of scenes and it did spoil my enjoyment of the film.
I believe the subtitle issue has been fixed for retail releases but this rental edition had the issue.
