HD Screencaps from Death Proof on Blu Ray.
Quentin Tarantino has strong dialogue in his movies and he is inspired by movies he has watched over the years, his influences are wide and diverse but he always puts a new spin on things, he made this particular film as part of a double feature with Planet Terror.
This was originally released in cinemas as Grindhouse and contained both Death Proof and Planet Terror as well as fake movie trailer segments.
Grindhouse was all the rage in the seventies when drive-ins were very popular in America and movie houses would often show the latest exploitation films as multiple features one after the other, inbetween features you would get trailers for new upcoming B movies.
For the home markets both Robert Rodriguez and Quentin Tarantino decided to add additional footage to their movies and release them separately, obviously a marketing ploy to make money because the original Grindhouse was a cinema flop as it cost $67m to make and recouped only $25m worldwide, Grindhouse in it's original cinema form will be released at a later date.
Death Proof started well and ended on an exciting note but i was a little bored with the middle of the picture which seemed to drag on a bit.
Kurt Russell as Stuntman Mike was especially fun to watch playing against type and he seemed to be having a great time, i also felt the director got good performances from all his cast.
The transfer seems to replicate the theatrical experience and all the specks, pops and imperfections of a worn cinema print are recreated here. It's interesting that they physically scratched the print rather than the usual digital tinkering to achieve the look of a worn print.
At around the 56 minute mark the worn cinema print is abandoned and the footage turns to black and white before turning to colour, personally i felt the worn cinema print look was just a gimmick that might have worked as part of the original Grindhouse double feature but on it's own it felt out of place and rather pointless. This disc is from the UK and Region Coded B.
Is that edge enhancement or ringing in frame 12 or are my eyes deceiving me.
