David Finchers Zodiac was shot using the Thomas Viper Filmstream camera system and Zeiss Digiprime lenses. Some sequences were filmed with normal 35mm camera's.
The Viper camera uses a feature known as Dynamic Pixel Management, which allows the camera to change its aspect ratio by vertically ganging pixels. This allows shooting at different aspect ratios without cropping the image which loses resolution or having to use anamorphic lenses.
The Viper is excellent at capturing images in low level lighting conditions without the need for specialist film lighting equipment and indeed Michael Mann used it on Collateral because of this.
The image produced using this camera system on Zodiac is very detailed and has absolutely no visible grain even in dimly lit night scenes.
I would go so far as to say this is one of the most detailed Blu Ray discs i have seen.
The film itself tells the real life story of the hunt for the Zodiac killer. You can click here for more detailed information on that particular case and for an informative read.
I thought the film was good but i felt the longer it went on it lacked some sort of spark and it might just be that i wasn't in the right frame of mind when viewing it. I usually enjoy this type of film though and i feel a repeat viewing will satisy me better than my first viewing.
Check out the fabulous detail in many of these images.
The film is on my reference list which you can view here.
