James Cameron's Avatar opens next month and has been specially shot so that the 3D edition will be seen in a 1.78:1 aspect ratio which is commonly referred to as 16/9 and the 2D edition of the film will be shown in 2.35:1.
Avatar is set during the 22nd century on a small moon called Pandora that is inhabited by ten foot tall blue humanoids called the Navi who are peaceful unless attacked.
What follows is a battle between the human military and the Navi and the human hybrids which get caught up in the war.
The film is set to be the most expensive ever produced in a 3D format and if it is successful then it may pave the way for more cinema's to be converted to digital 3D.
Converting cinema's to 3D is relatively cheap thanks to new digital projection technology.
